The Argonauts were the crew members of the ship Argo. They were lead by their captain Jason. The argonauts were technically pirates, because their goal was to steal the golden fleece. The Argonauts were a band of heroes in Greek Mythology who, in the years before the Trojan War, accompanied Jason to Colchis (modern day west of Georgia) in his quest to find the golden Fleece. Their name comes from their ship, the Argo, which was named after its builder, Argus. “Argonauts”, therefore, literally means “Argo sailors”. They were sometimes called Minyans, after a prehistoric tribe of the area. The ship is guarded by the goddess Hera , whom the ship is dedicated to. Hera had a favorable relationship with the Argonauts, and protected them throughout their journey to steal the golden fleece. When Jason turns 20, he journeys to see Pelias to reclaim his throne. At a nearby river, Hera the Queen of the Gods approaches him disguised as an old woman. While carrying her across the river he loses a sandal and arrives at court wearing only one. Pelias is nervous when he sees Jason missing a sandal, for an oracle has prophesied that a man wearing only one sandal shall usurp his throne.
Jason demands the return of his rightful throne. Pelias replies that Jason should first accomplish a difficult task to prove his worth. The task is for Jason to retrieve the Golden Fleece, kept beyond the edge of the known world in a land called Colchis (Southwest Asia ). The story of the fleece is an interesting tale in itself.
