Troglodyte

The Troglodyte (or Trog for short) first appeared in 1977’s Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger. In the film, Sinbad and his crew encounter the prehistoric creature near a waterfall, while initially feeling threatened, the Trog proves to be a shy, peaceful and friendly creature. After coming to an understanding with the humans, he helps them find the way to the Gateway to the Shrine. In the film’s climax, Trog appeared again and fought the Smilodon to protect his newfound friends, only to be tragically killed. However, his death would soon be avenged when Sinbad slays the predatory cat.

Inspiration[]

Trog was inspired by early renderings of the prehistoric Neanderthal man. Neanderthal fossils discovered in 1829 in the Engis caves paved way for many imaginative renderings of the creature, most of which are considered inaccurate by today's paleo-anthropologists.
