The Pteranodon appeared in The Valley of Gwangi and One Million Years BC. Commonly described a flying dinosaur, Pteranodon actually belonged to a group of prehistoric reptiles known as pterosaurs or "Winged Lizards" that inherited the skies from the Late Triassic to the Late Cretaceous, where they met their extinction along with the dinosaurs.
In exception to the small Rhamphorhynchus, Pteranodon's were over 18 feet in lenth, certainly capable of lifting a human. Pteranodon lived in North America durring the Late Cretaceous, but in The Valley of Gwangi, the creature survived in a remote forbidden valley in North America, along with other North American Late Cretaceous dinosaurs that survived the extinction. Pteranodons are also the most well known pterosaur, do to a large amount of fossils, more is known about Pteranodon than any other dinosaur. Pteranodons other Pterosaurs shared a common ancestor with dinosaurs, within the archosaurae family, but evolved membranes along it's fingers and waist enabling them flight. Pterosaurs ruled the Earth along with their relatives the dinosaurs for millions of years, until the reached their extinction possibly by competition with birds. It's survival may perhaps be then attributed perhaps to the valley's apparent lack of (predatory) birds.
One Million Years BCEditThis animal is seen kidnaping the love interest of our hero and flying off to feed her to her chicks. sadly a Rhamphorynchus comes and kills the pteranodon and her chicks.
Harryhausen's pterosaurs have bat like wings whereas Willis Obrian's pterosaurs depicted them more accuratley with a huge vast mebrane with spred from the waist to all the way to a single elongated finger bone.
